There are not so many 'old-fashioned' butchers around these days. I like the old tiles on the facade of this one in Wickham.
The shop was firmly closed today and I imagine the butcher thinks we all have leftovers from the Sunday roast (those of us who are not vegetarians).
Ray used to be a butcher's boy, to earn pocket money when he was in sixth form, and rode a bike delivering meat to customers. He used his own bike and had a canvas bag on each handlebar, sometimes with a leg of lamb in each, which I suppose was good for balance!
Our butchers is closed on a Monday, younare right it must be left over roast day......that doesn't happen much now though! This looks like a true butchers!
Love the tiles on the front of the shop. How odd that it is closed on Monday's. Do people still have a roast on a Sunday. Haven't had a Sunday roast for donkeys years. I think it is very British. Mum always had a roast on Sunday and left overs on a Monday either as hot pot or cold meat.
So glad you got this picture before this wonderful old place is gone. I like the colors and the reflection in the door. I haven't eaten meat in over 15 years, but I still like to see an old-fashioned business doing well.
If we have a roast, it's usually on Sunday but not every week. And this week there was left-over roast pork which Neil adapted to make a roast beef hash recipe on Monday which was very good. I don't think roast is quite such a common custom any more.
Great find and capture of this lovely old butcher shop. I to started in a butcher shop earning pocket money. But in the behind in the (small) factory. Making sausages, croquettes, meatballs etc. mainly for snack bars . Also hams ect. for the shop
Yes, I look forward to seeing it!
