Pipeline is a surf reef break on O'ahu's North Shore, notorious for huge waves which break in shallow water above a sharp reef, forming large, hollow curls of water that surfers tube ride. The Banzai Pipeline is considered the world's deadliest wave. It was averaging 12-15 feet today but last week there were reportedly some 30-footers!
More surfers have died or been seriously injured here than at any other surf spot.
All I can say is I 've waited years to witness a big wave surfing event. Hundreds of spectators were gathered on the shore to watch the world's best surfers compete in the Volcom Pro competition. Visibility was an issue because of light rain, low clouds and the fact that the waves were breaking about 500 yards off shore. The massive wave walls of water were absolutely breathtaking!
That's an excellent shot. Very nicely composed (rule of thirds?) That water is a wonderful colour. It's a long time since I visited Oahu (back in 1982), a beautiful place.
As Racel said, there was a story on the news tonight of a surfer who rode an 80' wave in Portugal to beat the existing record, looked very scary to me! This is an incredible photo, must be amazing to see for real!
Great action capture! It must have been real thrilling to watch these guys ride the waves! Oh, and the color of the water is amazing! And, I see they are not wearing wetsuits!
@summerfield Thank you for your kind comments and favs of my Hawaii pics! I was traveling at the same time you were and I enjoyed all your shots from your trip as well! Right now I'm in Tucson visiting friends and frustrated because I forgot my media card reader for my IPad and can't upload any photos. Oh well, just have to wait till I get home.
