My friend Roland modifying GM crossbars he found in his attic that are now in use to solve my car-top boat-carrying problem.
Roland and I received our recently-bought rowing shells on Sunday, http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2011-11-13
These shells are designed for a bit more speed and are not as sturdy-and-hardy as the open-water Alden — http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2011-06-16
The Alden is the utility craft that has introduced Clare, Roland and me to sculling on a regular basis.
My Dodge Caliber crossbars are not very far apart and I hoped to have a car-top system that would offer greater support to any and all rowing shells I might transport. Roland to the rescue!
After installing systems to haul two shells on his vehicle, he procured the hardware to provide me with a very similar system. Today he gave half of his morning to get such a rack on my car.
This is friendship. Thank you, Roland!

It's always good to have a friend or two like Roland in your life! - thank you Roland for helping out Thom with his rowing shells. -You two must come to Boston next year for the Head of the Charles Regatta - about 7,000 scullers come from all over the world. It's a fantastic event!
