Heirloom

We are given to understand this rocking chair “came over on the boat” from Germany with Clare’s great-grandmother. It was reupholstered and given to us as a wedding gift. Each of our girls was rocked in this chair as a baby.

Some time back I tried photographing this piece of furniture and — given the current theme — I had to try again. I was frustrated trying to get the whole chair in the frame: the result always looked twisted and distorted. So, taking what I have learned from the wonderful images from so many others on 365, it occurred to me that the entire chair didn’t have to be in the photo. That prompted me to wonder, What are the most important or attractive features of the chair? My answer was easy: the posts between the chair support and the arm above and the rocker below. So my photo attempts to highlight these features. A bonus — possibly using the magnify button above — is the detail of the wood grain on the front face below the cushion.

That turned out so well.

It's a beauty, a wonderful heirloom to treasure. I have a thing for rockers and small tables.

@lazydaisy0413 Thank you so much, Marie! The perspective for this shot is totally a result of a year on 365! I would have huffed and puffed and settled for a lousy, distorted shot of the whole chair, never pausing to consider zooming in on part of why it remains a sturdy, attractive and functional piece of furniture that can find a home in a modern home.

@jml0306 Thank you so much, Joseph! I looked at your 52 page and I am totally intimidated by the shots posted there!

@digitalrn Thanks, Rick! And why not have a thing for rockers, right!?? The other rocker we have is in another post: http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2012-01-06
The guest room rocker is the rocker Clare was rocked in as a baby. :)

@michelleyoung Thanks, Shells! It's lasted this long because it was crafted to last, and we enjoyed rocking our "babies" in it. Our older "baby" is 27 today!
