“Interior design”

On the way out to the lake, I noticed the “S-shape” of this flower stalk on the side of the road. On the way home, I stopped and shot a few frames. (Still no point-and-shoot to take in the boat with me.) While initially interested in how this stalk embodies the bend-but-don’t-break idea, I’m now more fascinated by the pattern “painted” on the inside of the flowers.

I didn’t know what kind of flower this is, so after an initial attempt with a “flower identification” web site, I just googled “pink bell-shaped flower” and immediately found “digitalis”- a genus of approximately 20 species known as “foxgloves.” Here we have, I believe, “common foxglove.”

Update (May, 2014): Now that I have access to better resources, I'm thinking this probably Digitalis purpurea; species page at PhytoImages, http://phytoimages.siu.edu/cgi-bin/dol/dol_terminal.pl?taxon_name=Digitalis_purpurea&rank=binomial

Confirmed February 2016, “Digitalis purpurea.”

Beautiful splatterings of dark pink inside. The angle on this is perfect to catch the pattern and the heaviness of the flowers. Nicely done.

Beautiful shot, Thom! I've never seen foxglove before, although I take an rx from its namesake "digitatlis". I have an irregular heartbeat, so I've been on "digoxin" - the synthetic form of digitalis for a long time. Nice to know that its associated with such a beautiful flower!
