Saw a swallowtail. One. Saw a hummingbird moth; again, just one. Both were gone before I could get outside. This was shot with just a +4 close-up filter and this is about the day’s best. Busy day of grading Ph.D. comprehensive exams, so there just weren't many frames shot today. :-\ The main little flower (“floret”?) is about 5mm across.

@cmc1200@cjwhite@kdrinkie@snipsnap@suek@psychographer@ruthmouch@lyoungs1023 Thank you, all! It was a sort of salvage shot in case I didn’t have anything else. For anyone who is curious, each of the individual “flowers” — including the central one above — is about 5mm across. That’s how close I can get with the “+4 filter” on my 18-55mm lens!
@michelleyoung Thank you, Michelle. A “double-thank you” of sorts: I actually got the “dead-on” pov hint from one of your recent posts (“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”). :)
@digitalrn Thanks, Rick. It's a rather unpleasant task, but reading those exams is one of the "necessary evils" of preparing the next generation of college economics professors...
@sparkleplenty1 Thanks so much, Joyce. I fear it's what I rely on, perhaps too much. I just "don't get out much" in this relatively small university town. I must say I have enjoyed trying to identify the new butterflies I "meet" and I have learned much about what's in our back yard and our garden, so that's been a good consequence of 365. I know you have enjoyed this facet of our collective obsession, too!
@kdrinkie So you do not have a "real" macro lens and must choose between as-close-as-you-can-get with your 55mm/f4.0 lens or backing up with your lens that goes out to 200mm or so?
You may have seen I have a butterfly bush of that exact type. I love it. I always wondered if I could just shoot a macro of a flower on it. apparently, you can! haha
@espyetta Yep; sure can! We haven't had a good rain in a couple of months. I water this bush occasionally, but not frequently enough, I'm sure. I'm wondering if that explains why there are many brown, rather than purple, "shoots". Are you able to keep yours all-purple?
@rhoing Well, they were all purple for a while..but maybe that was due to the increase in rain we had. Some are brown now...I thought maybe one of my precious buggies was eating it.
