My first significant retirement ‘yes’…

where I now go regularly to check for mail for the non-profit organization on whose board of directors I now sit as an at-large member and Board secretary. Well here is what it's all about: Carbondale's Varsity Theater, located in the center of town.

The theater was built in 1940 and the sole mission of the non-profit Varsity Center for the Arts (a 501(c)(3) organization for the presentation of musical or theatrical works) is to renovate and restore this historic building.

“The Varsity Center for the Arts stands in the center of downtown Carbondale, midway between the Carbondale City Hall and the campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. When it is renovated, it will be a symbol of the community’s respect for the past, commitment to the common good, and confidence in the future. Bringing this historic landmark back to life will allow our community to recapture the grandeur that was once the Varsity Theater.

“The campaign to restore the Varsity Center for the Arts represents a rare opportunity to change the face of downtown Carbondale and secure the future of its cultural community. The restoration of this historic building for use by the creative and performing arts anticipates a permanent home for one of the city’s oldest cultural institutions (The Jackson County Stage Company) and accessible performance and exhibit venues for cultural, civic, and educational presenters across the region.”
