Ornamental Cabbage by rhoing

Ornamental Cabbage

Brassica oleracea — Several familiar “common names” are associated with this species:
» Broccoli: Brassica oleracea var. italica
» Brussels Sprouts: Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera
» Cabbage: Brassica oleracea
» Cauliflower: Brassica oleracea
» Collards: Brassica oleracea var. medullosa
» Kale: Brassica oleracea
» Kohlrabi: Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes

I emailed my “plant systematics” friend about so many different food products coming from the same species. His reply: “Yes, Brassica oleracea is the ‘dog’ of the plant world, having been pushed to the limits of artificial selection. Isn’t it interesting that you could (if you wanted to) eat the leaves of that ornamental plant?!
