365 Days Wild - Day 59

A brilliant (but tiring!) day spent pond dipping, helping out with a summer Wildlife Trust event in Derbyshire.

Loos like a pretty place. Is pond dipping done to see what kind of creatures turn up?

Yes it is. it's just dipping a net in and moving it around in the water / mud / plants and then tipping the contents in a white tray with some of the pond water in it. I suppose ecologists do it to study sites etc but I do it with children - for fun and to engage them with nature. The creatures are carefully tipped back into the pond once we've had a good look.
