Starlings by roachling

Starlings

We never used to see starlings around here, just an odd couple visiting the feeders in the garden every so often, but I think numbers have increased in this area over the last few years and this winter, there's a roost of about 5000 living in a park in town!

I mentioned the starlings a few weeks ago, http://365project.org/roachling/365/2018-01-06 , and finally got out to see them this evening. It was freezing cold and snowing on and off but it was well worth getting out.

They're roosting in trees and you could walk right into the middle of them. It was so loud and you could really smell the droppings, like when you're near a seabird colony!

What a splendid sight. I have never seen a murmuration, so it is definitely on my list

@suesouthwood oh yes, you must do it! This was only my second one and it was only little really, not a proper display. The first one I saw was 4 years ago https://365project.org/roachling/365/2014-02-16

Wow. Well taken. I must remember the word 'murmuration' . Have seen a few but never with a camera at hand.
