Fluted bird's nest fungi by roachling

Fluted bird's nest fungi

I've never found a bird's nest fungus before so was excited to see this one today at the WWT centre in London.

The 'eggs' in the nests contain the spores and are bounced out of the cups by raindrops, allowing the fungus to spread.

I'm in London for a few days...but counting down the hours until I'm home again. Too much noise and light, too many people... London and me don't get along!

I can share your excitement - we had them come up in our yard (once only) and they were absolutely fascinating. They are so tiny - your photo of them has really shown them well. :)

@30pics4jackiesdiamond I like solitude and open space! I don't know what I was thinking really, an introverted country bumpkin in London was never going to be good, haha! I'm here to see a band and had the crazy idea that as I was coming all this way, I might as well make a few days of it.

I thought they were sea shells at first glance. They look very unusual.
