Yellow Tailed Cockatoo by robz

Yellow Tailed Cockatoo

Flocks of cockatoos have been passing over with some stopping to feed on the forest trees. They are very noisy and quite destructive - but just gorgeous!
Fav!

Do they destroy the grass fir trees? Our friends in WA showed us the trees the birds pick on and at and then they just collapse. Great sillhouette

@ulla Thanks Ulrika - do you get these in Launceston?

@30pics4jackiesdiamond Hi Jackie - you rarely see these on the ground ( actually I've never seen one on the ground) They like trees which have bark that they can shred off and get at any borers or bugs inside the wood. So they shred and tear off bits of wood and bark and throw it out of the way - you can hear them at work from quite a distance. And they usually have lookouts who are noisy too. And they are quite big! Cheers Rob

Great shot Rob. We see a few of these on the golf course.

What a juxtaposition- a pretty bird who ruins trees! Although I'm thinking that in a way they help "weed out" the infected trees from the healthy ones since boring type bugs go for trees with weakened bark. Well, enough of such musings! Nice silhouette!

@golftragic Don't you just love it when you hear them coming - I think half their appeal is their raucous call. And they fly nice and slowly - you get a chance to catch them!! :)

@olivetreeann Hi Ann - They are wonderful birds and I think you are probably correct - the don't attack the healthy trees. And they fly nice and slowly - gives you a chance to catch them!! Cheers Rob
