Australian Echidna

This quite large Echidna had tried to dig under a wire fence and became caught between a rock and a log - he could not back out because his spikes were caught in the wire. We released him and he then stayed around for several days - happily finding termites and ants to eat
Love it ...

@taffy Hi Taffy- he's much more interesting in action - he trundles and he snuffles - and ignores me watching him. We're going to go round today and modify all of the fences - it would have been awful if we hadn't found him when we did.

@30pics4jackiesdiamond LOL Jackie - we expected your hedgehogs to look a little like our Echidnas - we were surprised when we saw one - he was so small - and so quick!!

@rosie00 Hi Lesley - he is cute like your hedgehogs - but much bigger (about 40cm) and he trundles along. We were very surprised at how fast the hedgehogs move!

What a fun and fortuitous discovery for you! He reminds me of our porcupines. I'm glad he didn't perceive you as a threat. I wouldn't want to get stuck with those quills! That was really interesting to watch.

Love echidnas, they're so gorgeous. There was a great story about one in the Age the other day. Short version: dug up accidentally, went to an animal shelter, when graduated from milk to ants etc came out in a bad rash on tummy. After trying various other things, an allergist found Matilda was allergic to ants and most of the grasses she'd normally thrive on. Had anti-allergy treatment. Successful. But so tame by then has to stay at the shelter.

@olivetreeann Hi Ann - I'm glad you liked the Echidna - he was so busy and so unworried after we rescued him. It was just so lucky that we found him when we did - he couldn't possibly have got loose by himself. He was lovely to watch though. Cheers Rob

@golftragic What a story - it's quite incredible that an Echidna could be allergic to ants! It must have been tied up with how she was fed as a baby. No doubt she'll be a favourite at the animal shelter - they are just so darn cute! :)

How lovely, I understand they are quite shy so the video was extra special. Well done on the rescue Rob

@suzanne234 Thank you Suzanne - it was quite horrible for a few moments - we didn't know how long he had been caught - I thought he was dead!.After we released him he trundled around digging holes for two days - not like the accepted behaviour - not at all shy! He was so cute!! :)
