In a cage under the clear blue sky...

Well - that's what I'd like to see but we've had no luck yet.We have feral cats killing our native birds and we're trying this humane trap to catch them. They appear to be quite clever and sneaky - the chicken's gone but no cat!!
cool fav

@moviegal1 Thanks so much Kerrie - I can only wish that the trap was as effective as it is photogenic!! :)

I can find nothing good to say about feral cats other that to say that the quicker they're exterminated the better from all other wildlife.

What will you do, if you catch them?

@lastrami_ We can take them into the council and they check if they have an owner. There is a local vet who also checks them - if they are unhealthy or have no owner and are a truly feral cat then I'm afraid the vet euthanizes them. I'm sorry because I know this will distress you but I'm afraid our feral cats are not at all like your lovely Joshua. They have been dumped in the Aussie bush and bred there for years - because the conditions are harsh only the biggest, toughest ones survive. They are huge cats and such good predators that they can and do wipe out millions of native animals every year. It has been estimated that there are up to 6 million feral cats in Australia. We have seen them take parrots from our feeding tray - in broad daylight, from right beside our house. I'm afraid this has become our only option. I hope you can understand our situation and not judge us too harshly.......

Dear Rob, many thanks for taking time to answer.
I feared to read that. I heard about that problem some time ago and understand, that you want to protect the native animals.
But of course it breaks my heart, because I love cats :'( They only follow their instincts and want to survive, too.
When I understand it right, the basically problem is human-caused – as always.

We also have animals here which are not indigenous, and they could suppress other animals. People brought them here.
Now hunters try to minimize their population – without much success. And I'm sad for every single killed animal, no matter what kind of - as you are sad about the killed birds.

The worst enemy of nature and wildlife is humankind, and in my opinion, the world could be a much better place without us.
We are too many, and we destroy so much (including those who are not vegan, but of course that's not the only reason ... the list is endless).
In my opinion, species extinction is mainly cause by our overexploitation of natural resources, we deprive other creatures of their habitat more and more.

The problem is complex, and I'm miles away from being an expert. For this reason, I don't condemn.

Sometimes, human interference to solve one problem causes three new problems...I hope for a change of thinking and that we turn the corner and treat other creatures with respect (but that's an other theme).

Greetings to Australia :)
PS: hopefully this doesn't sound too confused or unfriendly. If so, please excuse me. I'm not good in finding the right words if I write in English.

@lastrami Thank you so much for your understanding Kerstin. I can't help but agree with a lot of what you have written - and I do fear that just by our sheer numbers and the way we live we have created a problem that is appearing to be so very difficult to solve. Our country is currently suffering yet again from fires which are destroying thousands of hectares oh native bush and also threatening many towns. The hot, dry conditions which have been present for so long may be the future normal ..... It is very worrying.
Again - thank you for your understanding. :)
