But actually so noisy, so stroppy and so smelly! Hundreds of these fruit bats congregate in huge colonies, usually near a water source and close to suitable flowering or fruiting sources.
They are actually quite fascinating to watch as they squabble, flap around cooling themselves, squeal at each other and then wrap themselves into bundles and go to sleep.
They do look interesting but I agree with you they are incredibly smelly in large numbers. There are hundreds in a park at Raymond Terrace and when we go there shopping the smell is incredible as we drive by them. They are quite near a McDonalds too and I don't know which smells worse ha ha
They really are some of the strangest looking and behaving creatures- but the world sure would be a "buggy" place without them. I remember seeing them at Disney World FL many years ago but they must be monitored as I don't remember any kind of smell. good shot!
@olivetreeann Hi Ann - I'm afraid these one don't help with bugs - they eat fruit and flowers and are really important for pollination. The little ones which often live in caves are the ones that eat the bugs. They are really cute! Cheers Rob
