Drop your tree, shape your post, cut to length, cut 3 grooves across the post (about an inch from each other and about 2-3 inches deep), chisel out the wood in between, dig a hole, hoist your post, notch your cross timber into the post, wire it into place......
@jerzyfotos Hi Jerzy - probably just after WW1 finished. That's when these original blocks were carved up and distributed to the returned soldiers. They had to clear and develop the land to try to make a living. Many of our fences date back to that time. The post in the photo is a part of one of these fences - but it never had the timber chiselled out to allow the cross bar to be inserted.... Cheers Rob
Lovely shot and edit. We used to make fences from willow branches. After being planted in the ground, it took root and strengthened. The bonus was the green leaves in the summer.
