Wattle sap by robz

Wattle sap

Wattles weep a lot of sap. Often it is because something has attacked them. This can be a good sign as the something may be a glider of some type.
What a fabulous macro, halfnhalf and lovely focus. Gotta be a fab fav.

@caterina Hi Caterina - thanks for having a look and I'm glad you liked the photo. Wattles are the Australian floral symbol. There is even a silly poem that my husband says:
This is the wattle,
Symbol of our land,
You can put it in a bottle,
Or hold it in your hand!

Gliders are marsupials which have a web of skin between their front and back limbs - they can stretch it out and glide between trees. They are a bit like little possums. They chew on the wattle bark to make it bleed sap which they then eat. They are very cute! Cheers Rob

@suzanne234 Hi Suzanne. There are a lot of different gliders. They range from the tiny little feather glider which weighs about 10 grams (that would be the thumb sized one) through to the sugar glider which weighs about 100grams and is about 20cm body with a 20cm tail through to the Yellow bellied glider which weigh about 600grams with a 30cm body and 45cm tail. They are all nocturnal so you don't see them very often. They are super cute!! Cheers Rob

@roachling Thanks Louise. These big blobs of sap always make me think of the lovely amber that they might have turned into under the right conditions. This one would be lovely with all of those inclusions. Thanks for having a look! Cheers Rob

@golftragic Hi Marnie - we do have gliders here so it could have been that. It was very neat and tidy though - and there were several others on the tree - so maybe it was damage from a borer? Whatever it was it was really cool in the sunlight! :)

@robz That's exactly what I thought too when I saw it :)
