Zoe discovered this Red Bellied Black snake near the dam yesterday. I got such a fright when I saw her sniffing its tail that taking a photo was out of the question. We went back today and found him again - under better circumstances.
@bintal Hi Sylvia - it was lucky she didn't actually have a go at it - just sniffed him. They are very venomous - but also very docile. They tend to just mind their own business. The main ways people get bitten by them is by being stupid and trying to kill them, or by walking through long grass without looking. :)
@fbailey Hi FB - they are poisonous but very docile. We actually like having them here because apparently they eat the Brown Snake babies. Brown snakes are bad news - very poisonous, very territorial and very aggressive. They will actually chase you to strike at you. Zoe would not survive long if we had many brown snakes around. Cheers Rob
@golftragic It's another reason that I always walk her on the leash - it stops her ferreting for them in the long grass. We have had a couple on the back patio - that wasn't good. We got those snake thumper devices that send out vibrations through the soil and we haven't had any since. Fingers crossed! :)
@robz Fully understood. We get tiger and brown snakes along the river paths, tigers, browns and copperheads on the golf-course. Often walk Maggie near the river so eyes constantly searching!!!
@golftragic We've had them about 3 years now and haven't had a snake (that we know of!) within their 15m radius. They are a bit annoying - they emit varying noises at varying intervals - you sort of get used to it - and some seem louder than others. I wouldn't fancy having your assortment of snake species as locals - that's a nasty little collection you've described!! :)
@robz Yeah, but as you said, if possible they normally get out of your way unless you do something dumb. If we do into longer grass looking for a ball you take a club and thump the ground with it at frequent intervals. In my book all snakes are nasty. I'm old-fashioned, hate the buggers, not scared of them, do respect them and consider that the only good snake is a dead one. Might have something to do with the ones I dealt with on the farm at close quarters.
