Now this was scary! The signposting was good, the roads were fine but there was absolutely no indication of the speed limit on the Motorway. And it appears that there is little policing of whatever it may be! We tried to sit in the ambiguous "middleman" lane - out of the way of the trucks and letting the speedy guys go. We were doing 60 or 70 mph (100 to 115kmph) and those speedy guys just left us for dead!!
LOL - in the UK, on ‘highways’ there will be a sign, circular, white with a black stripe angled through it. That, in the UK means ‘National Speed Limit.’ On motorways, that’s 70mph and on single carriageways, it’s 60mph. The signs when you enter a new ‘speed area’ are large, then every 500m or so they will be repeated, but smaller. On Motorways thespeed limit is often illuminated on the gantrys across the road (which is where they have the speed cameras that they, believe me, use to enforce the speed limit)
To confuse you more, on a single carriageway, where there are houses (residential) and street lights, there won’t be any road signs, it is just ‘known’ that the limit is 30mph.
Phil's put it very well there. I have driven that road only this year in March. You'll find 70 is fine on the motorways - that's the limit - but then you will be baffled by the people who zoom past you at 90 with one eye in the mirror looking for a police car or a camera!
You sat in the middle lane??? That drives Gary mad, mind you, most people do to be fair! When I've seen pictures of your roads, even the ones in towns they always look so wide, it must be quite unnerving driving on ours, especially with the speedy guys :)
@phil_sandford Ahhh Phil - thanks so much for the enlightenment!! And we did see those signs with the angled stripe - we actually wondered if they were like the old "blaze away" signs they used to have in the Northern territory - no speed limit - just go for it. We did find it pretty confusing but from what you have said I don't think we will have been booked. No doubt the rental car people will let us know if we have... Thanks for your info - much appreciated. Cheers Rob
@casablanca Hi Casablanca - they made us think there was no speed limit!! Errol just kept out of their way and let them go- some of them were a bit crazy. Anyway - we got the car back to the rental place in one piece - so that's always good. And it was great to have it - we saw so much. Cheers Rob
@rosie00 Hi Lesley - I'm glad it's not just us. I think the trouble is you're trying to do too much - watching the signs and the other cars! We're done now though - got the car back safely. Thanks for your comment. :)
@madeinnl Hi Ko - Unfortunately we're not coming to your lovely country. We've just flown into Copenhagen - everything is in walking distance - we love it!! Cheers Rob
@suzanne234 LOL Suzanne - the big roads were plain scary - the little roads were so small it was often impossible to pass another car. Both things made it interesting. Is the middle lane for a special purpose? We thought it was a safe intermediate between the trucks and the crazy guys.... :)
@golftragic Hi Marnie - the cars gone now - bit of a relief - but we did see a lot of things that we would have missed otherwise. Having a great time. Cheers Rob
@robz Ha, our roads can be a little testing! I find it funny when you meet a 4X4 on a narrow road, it's the other car that has to pull over onto the verge, it's like they forgot what their car is meant for and only use it for the school run :) The left lane is the driving lane on motorways, the others are meant for overtaking, of course it would be silly to constantly weave in and out when its busy but it's the drivers that stay in the middle lane when the left lane is empty that cause the problems. Having said all this, I'm a terrible driver so I'm not really in a position to comment on others! :)
