An engineering marvel! by robz

An engineering marvel!

This huge tower is part of the Trinity Church in Copenhagen. It is constructed at one end of the church and the foundation stone was laid in 1637. The church itself is magnificent but it was the Round Tower that fascinated me. It was built to house an astronomical Observatory and access to the observatory at the very top was by a continuous spiralling walkway which was approximately 10ft across. This walkway also allowed access to the University Library at one level, a viewpoint into the church at another level, access to two latrines at other levels, access to the bell tower further up and finally access to the observatory and lookout platform by a more conventional circular staircase.
What a fascinating place! I thought that was water flowing through it at first. I love clever engineering like this.

Rob this is a super photo, the varying shadows, light coming in but still retaining detail in the foreground. I love it!

Looks like a river of bricks. Getting that balance of light and shade surely wasn't eady

Incredible piece of engineering, especially at that time in history. Top shot Rob, it's a ripper.

@casablanca It was so clever - each of the arched roof lines supported the next section of ramp - and there was a hollow core that went right through the whole height. They must have been catering for the older knees of some of the astronomers - no stairs until just a few in a small circular staircase at the very top. A marvelous sight! :)

@30pics4jackiesdiamond Hi Jackie - thanks for your nice comment - the trickiest bit was actually getting a photo with no people in it! :)

@golftragic Thanks Marnie!! It was such a good place - that ramp was marvelous - and it did help the knees - much better than stairs!

@robz I'll bet, stairs are a major problem for me since my undercarriage has gone cactus.
