There is a huge fire raging on the Witzenberg Mountains. They are on the eastern side of the Tulbagh valley. The flames are being fanned by some very strong winds. It's going to be a long night for the fire fighters. I understand that some homes have been evacuated and that there are others that are under threat.
The smoke in the valley gave an eerie reddish glow to the setting sun.
I'm from Tulbagh, Western Cape, South Africa. Tulbagh is a small farming community.

Such a stunning shot, but oh dear! If only this wind would die down! The fires around us are under control for the moment. I can only hope the same goes for yours soon.
This is an incredible shot but too bad it is because of fires. I am always so sad to hear of a fire no matter where it is. They are so destructive and have done so much damage around the area that I live in. I certainly hope the winds die down soon.
@adrienneb our fire is still burning strongly and from what I understand it is contained but not fully under control. It's gone up onto the mountain ridge and hopefully the fire fighters can contain it on this side. There are helicopters water bombing and the fixed wing spotter plane is flying around. I'm sure that the farmers in Op-die-berg and Prince Alfred Hamlet will be watching closely as if the fire goes over the mountain they are at risk. The heard on the radio that the fire near Paarl is now under control but fire authorities are still worried about any change in the wind conditions.
It seems like it was last month that another fire was raging there. It must be an anxious time for everyone. I hope it all dies down soon and the fire will be completely out. In spite of the danger it represents, this is really a beautiful shot!
