Victoria Gate , built by the British in 1884-85, has been recently restored. It was designed by Emanuel Galizia and named after Queen Victoria. It replaced the Marina Gate (or Porta del Monte). . Porta del Monte (after Grand Master Pietro del Monte) was a single entrance gate with a drawbridge, designed by the great Military Architect Laparelli himself and built in 1569. It was one of the only three entrances to the capital city. The old gate was replaced to give better access to the harbour which at the time was the busiest part of Valletta
