TINTERN ABBEY CHURCH – WALES

This is what is left of this abbey church. What amazes me most is the large window which covers almost all of this side of the church. Wonder what glass – stained possibly – would have filled this great void.

The Abbey – of the Cisterian monks - was originally founded in 1131 but the remains date back from the 13th century. Because of its position well away from the Welsh hearland, its history is relatively uneventful. It was never important and suffered little in the periodic Welsh uprisings of the medieval period. When monastic life was brought to an ubrupt end in the 16th century it was allowed to fall in ruins and was rediscovered in the late 18th century.

I saw this shot after the second one. It is beautiful in spite of being run down. I like the colouring as well, and the composition.
