Shot taken from Tal-Gordan hilltop. Gozo is more hilly than Malta; it is sometimes referred to as the Island of the Three Hills for 3 of it’s highest peaks. Gozo is also more rural than Malta.
The fortified hilltop in the middle-left is the Cittadella. This is the fortified city of Gozo, surrounded completely by its ramparts. Its history goes back to at least the times of the Phoenicians some 4 centuries BC. The first fortifications were erected by the Romans a century later. Most of the current fortifications were erected by the Arabs between 800AD and 1000AD with added fortifications and modifications by the Order of the Knights of St John.
In the foreground is the hamlet of Ghammar while immediately behind – with the church in the middle - is the little village of Ghasri.
