These are part of the bastions which were added to the old fortifications of the Cittadella by the Knights of St John (now better known as Knights of Malta). They were constructed to cover the entrance of the city. You can see the bastions nice and clean from grass and bushes which had grown through cravices in the wall. This is because they are part of a huge restoration programme going on on Malta’s vast fortifications all around the two islands . This was only possible through the added funds from the European Union which Malta joined in 2004. In the foreground are steps leading to the old entrance of the Cittadella.
Colleen G. I took yesterday’s picture from from the top of the bastion close to that clock.
Thank you so very much for looking and for the lovely comments on yesterday’s picture. Your comments are immensely appreciated.
Nice shot- it reminds me of how the Old City of Jerusalem looked at night and also of the fortifications built on Rhodes (which were also built by the Crusaders).
