Dome of the Guarini Chapel from the inside (left) and from the outside (right). I loved how the ribs criss-cross the ceiling. Again I have taken many pictures of this wonderful Baroque chapel but the architecture of the dome has impressed me for its uniqueness.
The Guarini chapel is located between the Turin Cathedral and the Royal Palace. It is the work of Modenese architect Guarino Guarini who did not live to see it finished. It was built for the Duke of Savoy in the 17th century to host the Sacra Sindone (Holy Shroud which is said to have wrapped Christ’s body after His deposition from the cross). The Shroud arrived at the chapel in 1694 and remained there up to 1997 when the chapel was devasted by fire. The chapel has been restored but the Shroud today rests in the Turin Cathedral.
