ELECTION FEVER by sangwann

ELECTION FEVER

Malta will choose the party to govern it for the next five years next Saturday. The Maltese will vote for the candidates of their choice on that day. The election campaign this year has taken longer than any other previous one because the outgoing government lost an important vote in Parliament. The race for power is between two main parties that are very close to each other. Those eligible to vote are always urged to submit their preferences and turnout is normally very high, up to 98%. This year it is not expected to be different. Yesterday, in Sliema, one of the parties, The Nationalists held a Mass Meeting for supporters in Sliema. The other main party, the Labour Party had theirs in Floriana. Preparations for the Sliema event took all morning. I was passing through there with my camera on my normal walk and thought I would take a shot of what was going on. The stage is right in the middle of the road furthest away from the camera. When I saw the late evening news covering both parties’ events I thought that at least half the population was at one or other of the Meetings. Funny when one could follow them on tv.
Thank you so much for looking and for your wonderful comments on yesterday’s picture.
Love this Dione, especially the tail lights. Thanks for the update of whats happening in your country.

Nice illustration of the calm before the storm. As you imply, why be there when you can watch it in the comfort of your own home? Because some people just like to be part of a crowd making a noise but probably not hearing very much, I guess!

You have my sympathy Dione, we are facing a Federal election on 14 September and the campaigning has already begun. Australia has a quaint law that makes voting compulsory and there's a fine if you don't report at a polling station. As we will be on a cruise ship on that date we have to make special arrangements to cast our vote before we board the ship.

Very nice street shot!
We have a national election this year - in September. They've already started "campaigning" (or bad mouthing) each other... I hope your politicians are a little more useful!

Thank you for your kind thought. I don't mean to offend you, but would prefer not to be included in long lists of name-tagged impersonal thanks, please, if my "interesting comments" do not merit an individual response.
