THE VILLAGE FESTA by sangwann

THE VILLAGE FESTA

My early morning walk on the 3rd day in Gozo led me to Gharb (pron. are-b), another small village of farmers. Preparations were underway for the festa which was to be celebrated the next Sunday. Village festas are a big thing in the Maltese Islands - they are synonymous with the feast of the patron saint of the parish. At Gharb the church is dedicated to the Visitation of the Holy Virgin. The church, in the baroque style was built between 1699 and 1729.
Gharb has a population of around 1500.

Tomorrow: Jeff and Nick - The sequel.

thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday's picture.
How wonderful to still have these traditions and I bet it's a day everyone looks forward to. Beautiful big old church for a village of 1500.

It strikes me that with a population of only 1500 that these families have been celebrating this festa for generations. That is awesome!
