More fireworks shots. I was lucky to have the dome of the Mosta church in my line of vision so it would show its splendor in each and every shot I took.
The Mosta church boasts the third largest unsupported dome in the world. The church dedicated to The Assumption to Heaven of the Virgin Mary is commonly known as the Rotunda. On 9 April 1942, the church was nearly destroyed during World War II when an Axis bomb hit the dome of the church and fell right through among the congregation. Fortunately it failed to explode. The detonator was removed and a replica bomb is now displayed as a memorial.
The Rotunda was designed by George Grognet de Vasse, a French citizen resident in Mosta. It took 27 years to complete but the result is a tourist attraction of world standard. Grognet chose the type of stone by insisting on having one slab from each quarry operating in the Islands. He then proceeded to test their durability. In the end he chose a quarry in Mosta.
Thank you so much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday's picture.
Great collage! I did something like this for the 4th of July here, and had fun doing it. What I like about your shots especially is the way the dome looks a little different in each one. Beautiful!
Great story
Thank you very much for the fav. on my pic.
