24th August. Detail of a figures on one of the side of the pediment of the state theatre in Klagenfurt in Austria. I loved how this shot came out when I processed it in B&W.
Klagenfurt was our first stop for the day. It is the capital of Carinthia in Austria bordering Slovenia. It is the sixth-largest city in the country. The city's name, literally translates as "ford of lament" or "ford of complaints". Scholars and also common people have a dilemma on the name. A story reported by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, who later became Pope Pius II, says that a baker's apprentice was accused of theft and executed, but when a few days afterwards the alleged theft turned out to be a mistake and the lad was proved to be totally innocent, the citizens' "lament (= 'Klagen') went forth and forth".
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday's picture.
What a sad story!
@gozoinklings You are correct that is a severed head or 'theatre mask' in the statue's left hand. @dulciknit A similar statue is on the other side of the pediment.
