Saw this house during our late afternoon stroll on Friday last, after we had unpacked our belongings on arrival in Gozo. I liked how that sunblind over the front door has been decorated.
In the years after WWII there was a recession in Malta and, besides the devastation caused by the continuous bombings, many people were without work. The Colonial government encouraged people and even provided financial assistance for them to emigrate to Australia or Canada. Many Maltese (Gozitans included) took up the idea – many of them worked hard and made good money, settling there with their children growing up, getting married themselves and remained there for the rest of their lives. Others, many of them Gozitans – after all their labours - decided to retire in their country of origin, bought their own house and settled here once more. But they never forgot their time abroad and, in Gozo, you will find many houses named like this one or ‘God Bless America’ ect. with sculptures of kangaroos, the maple or the American Eagle.
Another thing which may be unique for our islands is the blind made locally of cane which is hung in front of the front door to protect it from the scourging summer sun.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday’s picture.
Great capture, nice to see that those who made Australia home for most of their life can settle back in their country of origin. I was born in Holland but there is no way I'd go back there.
