Our last visit of the day was to a church in Manopello, a small village in Abruzzo, Italy. In this church a small veil is exposed for public worship/viewing. It is said to be the ‘Vera Icona’ or as it is more commonly known as ‘the Veil of Veronica’ . It has been suggested that it is the cloth placed over Jesus' face in the tomb and that the image was a by-product of the forces unleashed by the resurrection, forces believed to have also formed the image on the Shroud of Turin. Our guide explained that when the veil was placed over the Turin shroud, it fitted exactly the face of Christ imprinted on the shroud.
This is a subjective subject on which I will not linger. Those who are interested may obtain further information by clicking on ‘Manopello Image’ on Wikipedia.
I took a number of pictures of this reliquary but prefered this low key shot because I loved the dramatic the effect.
Thank you very much for looking and for your wonderful comments and the fav's on yesterday's picture.
That´s so intriguing....I have heard of it but never seen it, would be interesting .....Love the low key, it fits the subjet, adds a bit of mystery here
@maggiemae Many believe it is the face of Jesus Christ after resurrection. There is a lot of information on the site I indicated on Wikipedia if you would be interested to check out. It may not be proper for me give a synopsis of it all here.
If anything this beautiful artwork can be a source of inspiration, even if it is highly unlikely that it would be the original cloth. It can cause us to ponder and reflect- and that is perhaps a wise thing to do before such artistic beauty. Nice shot.
