I took this shot as we approached the town of Lanciano on the third day of our Abruzzo holiday. I liked how I captured a friend taking this shot of that spire which is clearly visible in the screen of his camera.
Lanciano was the first stop of the day. The town boasts a millennial history having been founded, earlier than Rome. The ancient town stretched over three hills, in sight of the Adriatic sea and the Majella mountain. It became famous over the centuries for its trade fairs. During World War II, it was an active center of the Resistance against the German occupation for which, in 1952, it was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valour by the Italian President.
Lanciano is said to have been the home (or birthplace) of Longinus, the Roman soldier who pierced Christ’s side with his lance.
