This is one of three stone corbels which hold a traditional Maltese wood-covered balcony. The lady is well-endowed, isn’t she? There are corbels in many different shapes and sculptures to be found around the Maltese Islands. Unfortunately, many others have given way to modern structures but those left are now protected by the government.
While staring at the beauty of the sculpture on my computer screen I suddenly realised that it looks like a figurehead which adorned the bow of galleons during the times of the Knights of St John and the early days of British rule. An idea came to me that these corbels could have been devised on those figureheads.
