The interior of Siena Cathedral is a masterpiece of Nicola and his son, Giovanni Pisano. There are many great sculptures and added to them other artistic works by different artists.
I have taken many shots of the interior but I didn’t want to post a shot that could be easily downloaded from the internet. So I am posting a shot showing the atmosphere inside the cathedral at the time of our visit. Visitors, and there were many of them, were flabbergasted by the beauty of the Siena cathedral. Cameras – without flash – were clicking continuously. I was not very very excited for the simple reason that I was there around 4 years ago and I remembered very vividly whatever was on view. Still it didn’t keep me from taking loads of shots.
One new thing I learned, though. In the transept on the right of the photo is a funerary monument. It is for Fra Mark Antonio Zondadari and I said to myself: ‘Zondadari was an Italian Grand Master of the Order of St John the Baptist that ‘ruled’ the Maltese Islands almost for 3 centuries.’ As far as I knew he was buried in Malta. When I came home I checked it out and I found that he came from a Siena noble family and that his body was buried in Malta but his heart was taken for burial in Siena Cathedral according to his wishes. Hence the monument.
Another thing, in Malta the surname Pisani is not uncommon. Who knows, they could have come from the same family as the artists.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments and the fav’s on yesterday’s picture. I appreciate them all and they are so encouraging.
Ah, I've been here a number of times. The marble came from Carrara which is near where we have a family house (in the foothills of the Apennines outside Lucca).
It would look great if the perspective
were upright.
