The Battistero – Baptistry – of the Siena Cathedral is cut off from the cathedral but just round the corner. That is another work of art which you cannot pass by without taking many pictures.
The baptismal font which is at the centre was created between 1417 and 1431 and is decorated with panels representing the life of John Baptist, The panels, in bronze and the statues in between , are the work of well known artists including Jacopo della Quercia and Donatello himself.
The walls are covered with frescoes by Sienese and Florentine artists.
With the OPA passs which we bought at the ticket booth, we were able to visit also the Facciatone, the crypt of the cathedral as well as the Museo dell’opera. In the latter two places the taking of pictures, even without flash, was not allowed.
Many, many thanks for your wonderful response to yesterday’s picture and the many fav’s. They are very much appreciated.
Have you thought of how to take a picture while people are passing,
think about it.
