A panoramic view of Siena showing the Torre del Mangia.
The name Torre del Mangia refers to its first bellringer, Giovanni di Balduccio, nicknamed Mangiaguadagni for his spendthrift tendency or his idleness or gluttony. The tower was built to be exactly the same height as the Siena Cathedral as a sign that the church and the state had equal amounts of power. It is part of the Palazzo Pubblico which was construction in the late 13th century to house the republican government, consisting of the Podestà and Council of Nine.
Such character in the roof lines and designs and natural beauty as far as the eye can see in the background. It would be hard for me to leave such a lovely place.
