PULCINELLA by sangwann

PULCINELLA

Have just arrived back home after a glorious weekend in Gozo with Christine (my wife), my brother, Joe, and his wife, Mary Rose, and my sister, Mary Grace, and her husband, Joe. We had a great time, great food – more than we should have had – and lots of wine. I took many pictures of which I will show some after uploading them on the computer.
In the meantime I will continue with my shots of our Tuscany holiday– day 6
This is Pulcinella, a well-known Napolitan character of the Commedia dell’Arte. This Pulcinella (in English the closest interpretation of the word is ‘ jester’ or ‘clown’) is part of a clock on top of a tower and it strikes the hour with its rod. The clock tower – Pulcinella Clock tower as it is known - dates from 1523 but the statue dates from the end of the 17th century. It is one of the symbols of Montepulciano.
We were ten minutes early to watch the striking of the hour but there was no time to wait as we hadn’t paid for enough time at the parking area.
Thank you very much for looking and for the lovely comments and the fav’s on my previous two pictures.
They have similar figures in St Marks Square in Venice! Fascinating!

Shame to miss the striking of the hour but an interesting to see anyway. Does it get a bit confusing sometimes with two Joe's and two Mary's?

Great shot- I think our American version is called Punch and Judy- but I'd have to look it up to be sure if it's based on this fellow or not.

@sangwann : Understandable . It was Italian people theatre from the Middle Ages often preform on the streets. A Paljas is a comic Harlekin. August is the simple, ignorant, one . Often played by a fatty/fatso man.
