The lion is on the coat of arms of Jean Parisot de La Vallette, the Grand Master who built the new city for Malta and after whom it is called. This lion statue stands holding a shield with the coat of arms of the Grand Master and is at the beginning of one of the narrow streets that lead from the city bastions to the city centre.
