This is one of two last shots I am posting today from the series on our evening in Cottonera. I am posting these shots earlier than usual while I am waiting to be picked up and taken to the airport for a flight to Milan in Italy. My son, Jean-Pierre, and my-son-in-law, Ian, both supporters of Italy’s most popular football club, Juventus, convinced me to go with them to watch an important league game against Roma. I am not a Juventus supporter but I’m sure I will enjoy the short stay. Will be back on Sunday evening. Will not be able to post till then.
I hope I haven’t bored you with this long series. I took this shot from the Bormla (Cospicua) Waterfront and across Number One Dock.
Number one Dock was the oldest dock of the Malta Drydocks. After many years of debate the dock was cleared and the area now provides a lovely walk along Bormla’s waterfront. The buildings you see lit with red lighting from below were the workshops of the various dockyard trades. Towering over them is the entrance to L-Isla (Senglea).
L-Isla (meaning ‘the island’) is another isthmus of land jutting out into Grand Harbour. Grand Master Claude de la Sengle who preceded La Vallette, the Grand Master who built Valletta, chose to rename it Senglea. After the Great Siege of 1565 it was given the name of Citta’ Invicta (Unconquered City). Maltese people prefer to use the old name.
Many thanks for viewing and for your comments and fav's on previous pictures.
