From Wied iż-Żurrieq to Qrendi, not very far away but I had to drive through a narrow street full of potholes. The second time in my life that I came to this place just to take some shots and show the place to Max, who, I have to say, wasn’t much interested.
Il-Maqluba (meaning ‘the upturned’) looks like a crater. Geologists say it is a doline, a sinkhole or natural depression.
On the 23rd November 1343, Malta experienced one of its most severe winter storms ever, possibly accompanied by an earthquake. It was at this time that il-Maqluba was formed. Being the middle ages, this natural event was obviously turned into a legend. This legend says that a group of bad people living together in a hamlet did not heed God’s warning , through a good woman, against their bad ways. God, therefore, decreed that the land swallow the hamlet, sparing none except the good woman (taken from Wikipedia).
Today you cannot walk down to the bottom of the crater which is completely covered by thick vegetation.
