This is the main (I think) road of Ostia Antica which is at least one mile long. I took the shot when we were half way through its length while kneeling down on the rough ground.
I have been to Pompei (of Roman times) and I always thought that there was no archeological site as big as that city. But the archeological size of (Roman) Ostia, to me, looked even bigger. The old city looked very well planned. My brother-in-law an I could have easily spent the whole day going round the area but the girls at one point in time, decided to turn back telling us that they would be waiting for us at the exit. I will show you a few more shots later.
Ostia Antica is not far from the modern town of the same name. It is the location of the harbour city of ancient Rome. The name “Ostia”is derived from the Latin”Os” meaning mouth – therefore “At the mouth of the River Tiber”. Ostia was the sea port of Rome but due to silting it is now is situated 3 km from the sea.
