Continuing my visit to the Cottonera Lines. I may post more shots I took of these fortifications later but I have to move on as I have many more pictures to show. This is Hompesch Gate on the main road leading to Żabbar. In the archway is a cross placed there on the occasion of Good Friday. This is not part of the Cottonera Lines.
I had driven to this area with Christine some days before I took this shot looking for some night shots to capture. The cross had lovely lights on but as it was during the worst of the pandemic and there was lots of traffic and I couldn’t find a parking nearby I decided not to stop hoping to return on another day. This time it was at day light.
The Hompesch Gate, was built in 1801, on the initiative of the people of Żabbar to honour Grand Master Ferdinand Von Hompesch zu Bolheim who, in 1797, had declared Żabbar a city giving it the title of Citta Gratiosae Hompesch. The Gate, consisting of a single arched opening is built in the neoclassical style. It was restored some years ago.
