Was off again the other day – end of March, I think – to take some shots of part of the Cottonera Lines, a 40Km stretch of fortifications surrounding the three cities of Bormla, L-Isla and Birgu.
This is St Clement’s Gate, part of the Cottonera Lines as seen through a gate of more recent build.
I discovered this by chance because I was driving on the inner side of the city walls where there were blocks of buildings. I parked the car, walked through the open spaces of the buildings, crossed the road, went through St Clement’s Gate, crossed another road and walked through another gate of more recent build, probably when Malta was a British colony. You can see the architectural difference between the neo-baroque gate of the Cottonera Lines and the stark plain but effective gate the later era.
