Had a lovely train journey north ....with Allan as far as Inverness, where we had a coffee before I caught the train to Tain.
The light was amazing and I am rather pleased with the views from the train especially as it was going 'too fast for photos' I thought!
These views across to the Black Isle (which is not an island but a peninsula!) are all very special as they have been so connected with going home or coming home for the last 36 years. And for two of these I was teaching on the Black Isle so got very used to seeing oil rig construction etc which was at its peak in the late 70s when I was there.
I love the lines made by the farm machinery.....some of which I suspect got bogged down this year as there was so much water in the fields. And the big skies. And the watery colours.
The final photo on the bottom right is special as it looks across to the Sutors of Cromarty, two opposing headlands which mark the entrance to the Cromarty Firth. This was my route home from Cromarty each week end in the workmen's ferry! Mum used to meet me at Nigg each Friday afternoon and drop me off each Monday morning. You can see some of the large industrial buildings on the north shore (left side) beyond the trees. Not sure exactly what is happening there now as it has had a very 'quiet spell' over the last number of years. But still has a very special place in my memories!
The station name at Dingwall has both the English and Gaelic names (as do many Highland stations now) - in Gaelic it is 'the mouth of the (river) Peffery' which is quite different to the name Dingwall which I think is Norse. The second station photo is at Invergordon where some humour has been painted on the old doors and window - different characters waving to the travellers, having a chat, etc, etc. Always makes me smile!
What a great journey . not just physically. I just love the long views and th special quality of that Northern light. What a special childhood you had.
Very pretty! I would love to take a trip here by train. It's lovely to watch the landscape from the window of a train. Looks like you had a nice trip. Great collage.
Lovely to see some of the views of your youth !!!! Your collage is very helpful in building a picture of the journey north ! Still quite a bit of straw in the fields I see !
