Mòd nan Eilean Siar

This 'Celebration of Gaelic Music and Culture' event was the main reason for travelling to the Western Isles this week.
Allan sings with Aberdeen Gaelic Choir (Còisir Ghàidhlig Obar Dheathain) and they were performing on Friday. The events are held in different venues in Stornoway and there are lots of 'fringe' activities throughout the day and evening......and much later!
I was in the hall early for the most prestigious choir competition, the Lovat and Tullibardine Shield. We were glad to find coffee shops and interesting exhibitions to keep out of the rain. Lawrence - one of the students in the choir won the solo Sea Song competition and was thrilled with his trophy! (Allan's name is on it as he won it a few years ago!)
One of the real delights is the spontaneous singing in restaurants - between courses - when anyone there who knows the songs! can join in. It is lovely and I prefer it to the competitions with all the disappointments that are evident! On Saturday there was to have been an outdoor mass choir sing but you can see the weather didn't allow that!! And the link to listen to the choir is on BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal (for a few days) http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00l9w9j
What a wonderful event and happy times.

I hope these local cultural events never die out. They seem to define our communities. This looks a good event - especially the impromptu singing!
