Monastery of St. Simon the Tanner

Catching up on our trip to Cairo......this was an amazing visit. I'd heard about 'Garbage City' quite a number of years ago so it was quite something to see it for myself. Our guide Ali took us in a taxi - driving through the streets - where you could see the ground floor level of buildings with people dealing with the garbage - and then up to the Monastery. There one of the church team told us the history and information about the place and it was quite something.
The Cave Church holds 20,000 people!!! I'd love to hear the singing with all these people in that setting. The acoustics would be awesome!
At the end we went to the Recycling workshops where some beautiful craft items were being created. It all seemed just 'right'!
Three good things
1. A fantastic tour guide
2. Transformation - one person's rubbish is another's treasure.
3. The people involved are not by any means poor and apparently have quite luxurious apartments upstairs from where all the work is done.
Great portrait
