I have always loved the scene of the marching band taking the field to perform their show. These youngsters comport themselves with such poise, and they really look like the young adults they're aspiring to become.
Today was our district's annual North/South game between the two high schools. But districting in our school district is odd - we live within jogging distance of High School South, yet my son attends High School North, and the two schools are very mixed between the two townships that comprise the district. The kids in both high schools know each other from activities such as Little League, religious school, Boy Scouts, etc.
There is always a rivalry between the sports teams, but the marching bands have a proud tradition of mutual respect. Before the game our marching band stood with respect while High School South performed its routine, and the South kids similarly stood during our band's halftime performance. The band kids cheered each other on, and shared pizza and desserts during the third quarter (the quarter that the bands typically grab a bite to eat after playing pep tunes in addition to their show). I was really proud of how well these young men and women acted and how they genuinely cheered on their counterparts from the rival school.
