Next doors garden is west of ours, and so blooms are backlit in the evening. These kniphofia, blooms are well past their best, but still justify their common name of red hot poker. When o9ur neighbours moved in a few years ago they inherited a large garden two thirds of which was given over to vegetables. This may have been a contributory factor in their choice of house, since they have left the garden exactly is they found it. Our garden, on the other hand, is mostly lawns and flower beds, more suited to dogs and grandchildren, although we do have three raised vegetable beds, and grow beans and a wide variety of fruit.
