The path around the quarry gently ascends to, I estimate, about 200 feet above the surrounding countryside on one side, and a drop of about 400 feet to the quarry floor on the other. With views across the fields and woods, and across to Croft Hill on the far side of the quarry, it is a popular route, sufficiently well-trodden to prevent the wild grasses, particularly tall this year, from squeezing the path into a green canyon as far as dogs are concerned. For much of the route years of quarry spoil separate the path from the quarry, a haven for wildlife, and in this area, separated from the path by a low fence, grasses flourish, glowing gold on our westward journey into the sun on our way home after an evening walk.
